A career is not something that you put on like a coat. It is something that grows organically around you, step by step, choice by choice, experience by experience. ~ Wade Davis, Anthropologist, Ethno-botanist

Thomas started out in an engineering design office (aerospace), and subsequently became Manager of Design and Development for a Canadian sailing yacht manufacturer. He spent several years as a regional manager for a Canadian log home company, and developed new designs and training programs for contractors in that role. He has served two terms on municipal council for a village in Central Ontario.

In 1999, Thomas opened his own design business, Black Sheep Design, and designed and supplied architectural, way-finding and interpretive signage for municipalities, parks, golf courses, wineries, chartered banks and numerous businesses. He then became a representative to the architectural/design community for a Canadian manufacturer of furnishings for healthcare facilities, and remains engaged in this activity.

In 2007, Thomas graduated from Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph with the Ontario Diploma in Horticulture/Landscape Design, and thereafter added specialized studies in Healthcare Garden Design at the Joseph Regenstein Jr. School at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Most recently, he has been certified and accredited in Evidence Based Design (EDAC) by The Centre for Health Design.
